Welcome to The Little Bluestem Farm Almanac

Musings to celebrate and share in the rhythm of the seasons

In an effort to build community and nurture deeper connections with all of you and with the natural world, we are exploring new possibilities for ways to bring you into life on the farm. This newsletter, which we are calling the “Little Bluestem Farm Almanac,” will be the first step. Just like the Farmers’ Almanac I used to pore over in front of the fireplace at my grandfather’s house, this Almanac will focus on the rhythm of the seasons. We’ll share updates about what is going on at the farm, what we are growing, what we’ve been cooking (some new recipes and some that have been in our family for generations), what we’ve been making (everything from a budget for the new year to handmade Christmas ornaments), and some ideas for activities to share with your friends and family.

We live by the seasons here at the farm. That means we do certain things and celebrate in particular ways in each season. Winter is the time for making soup. In the spring our time is filled with seed planting. It often seems like summer is an endless parade of buckets needing to be washed. And, in the fall, we make muscadine jelly and plant daffodil bulbs. We have come to think of the seasons as verbs, and we hope you will join us in wintering, springing, summering, and falling.
